Horror Movies that Have Been Games

Many of us that are horror fans always hope to see our favourite movie maniacs such as Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface be created and pop up into a new horror video game sometime. The fact is and that some of us may already know, these popular horror maniacs have already been in games. The older games have already based games off of these popular horror movie titles. Although we still hope to see these popular horror titles come into a new game these days, here is a bit more information on the older ones.

Nightmare on Elm Street- There was a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) video game based on this popular horror movie title, A Nightmare on Elm Street.  Through the game you have to play through different obstacles and objects to find and defeat Freddy Krueger.

Friday The 13th- Another popular horror movie, Friday the 13th was also put on the NES system for the horror fans back then. Again, as most video games were similar on the NES system, during the Friday the 13th game, you have to choose your character and get through different obstacles. By going through different cabins, you will have to find and kill Jason Voorhees.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre- This game was released for the Atari system. With very cheesy graphics, the game was about your chance for getting to be Leatherface. Throughout the game you are basically going after people and objects with obviously a chainsaw.

Halloween- This game was also created and released for the Atari system. Again with cheesy graphics (as were most games on the older systems). The main point of the game is escaping Michael Myers. He will be chasing you throughout a house and you must find away to defeat him.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula- This game was based off of the popular movie and created for many systems. It was created for NES, Super Nintendo, Amiga and Sega systems. Most of these games had similar story lines.

It would be extremely great if these popular horror movies came onto a newer video game with excellent graphics. All of us horror fans would be waiting. How about coming out with the game Freddy vs Jason? Or how about a game with all the movie maniacs involved?

Dante’s Inferno Review

Let’s step away from movies for a minute, and talk about an excellent horror game. I bought this on PS3 last week, and all I can say from the moment I put the game in, was “WOW”. I got hooked on this fantastic horror game and couldn’t put the remote down. This game was extremely well made and the graphics were excellent, from the demons, to the backgrounds. The game was full of demons, monsters and other crazy evil spirits.

It’s about an Italian Mercenary named Dante that tries to get the soul of his loved one, Beatrice. She was pulled into hell by an evil force and Dante must go through the 9 circles of hell to get her back. Dante uses a cross for his holy powers and a scythe for his violent unholy powers. You get to chose to absolve and forgive the sins or punish them, allowing you to you build up Dante’s unholy or holy meter to unlock different upgrades to his weapons, moves and spells.

The backgrounds in this game are simply amazing. Each circle of hell becomes more interesting and giving you the chance to fight against more evil demons along the way. But the graphics are extremely well done and made this game worth the money.

The background soundtrack is also good and sets an eerie mood to the game.

Dante doesn’t talk much, when he does; it’s usually to the spirit guiding him or certain demons. However it sometimes sounds like he says the same thing each time. “Who has passed this circle?” etc.etc. If you play the game, you will start to see it as well. However, that’s not to bash the game, because the rest is well worth it.

If you are a horror fan, I highly, strongly recommend that you get this game. Play on easy difficulty if you need to, guaranteed you will enjoy this game!

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994)

If you read the book and were wincing at every strained plot device, and the mention of the word “wretch” for the hundredth time you may be pensive about this film but don’t hold the book against it. The film Frankenstein is expertly created based on the revolutionary novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (wife of the poet Shelley) and although her writing skills were unrefined the film certainly is not.

In case you don’t know the classic tale Frankenstein already, it’s about a scientist called Victor Frankenstein who embarks upon a grisly scientific study of human anatomy and electrical impulses. The result is a creature comprised of parts of the dead and with human understanding. No sooner does Victor create the beast does he reject it in his horror at what he has done. The creature is not inherently evil in any way but its treatment, disfigurement and own self loathing lead it to a path of destruction and vengeance on Victor Frankenstein his creator and father.

This is a powerfully moving take brought to life by Robert de Niro (the creature) and Kenneth Branagh (Victor Frankenstein). Interestingly enough Branagh also directed this movie in place of the film’s producer Francis Ford Coppola who directed Dracula two years earlier.

Sleepy Hollow

This film is actually a remake of a large string of Sleepy Hollow tales immortalised in film but is by far the most compelling and excellent Sleepy Hollow film to date. Ichabod Crane, a man of scientific mind that travels to a small Dutch village called Sleepy Hollow to solve the murders of three of the residents found decapitated. Despite his best efforts to rationally explain the situation, Ichabod falls deeper into the possibility that the deaths are from a supernatural cause. Despite the disturbing and hellish headless horseman that appears and slays the townspeople, Ichabod is sure there is method to the madness and that someone in Sleepy Hollow is responsible for the attacks.

You will truly find yourself shocked by the truth and as the past is revealed and lives are on the line we are utterly mesmerised by the performance of Johnny Depp (Ichabod Crane) and Christina Ricci (Katrina Van Tassel) as there blossoming love is bombarded by the supernatural horrors of the headless horseman and the terrible secret he and Sleepy Hollow hides. Sleepy Hollow (1999) is a chilling gothic fantasy film expertly created with fantastic acting and superb dialogue, a definite must see for all horror fans.

Sometimes They Comeback

Sometimes They Comeback is based on a short story by Stephen King. The story was left with a few open holes in it which this movie endeavours to fill up. Sometimes They Comeback goes a bit deeper into the Stephen King tale and successfully explores the gaps Stephen King left behind. This movie is about Jim Norman and his past life he left behind in his hometown. Returning to his hometown to teach, he notices a student that looks all too familiar to a past that haunts him. His brother was murdered in front of his eyes by four teenage youths who later died (all but one) when hit by an oncoming train.

The flashbacks and grim reality of what happened are chilling and disturbing and although the characters of the youths are somewhat funny in places the characters as a whole are terrifying and are expertly handled. In fact this is a film you will find yourself turbulently switching between laughter and screaming all the way through. This is a rollercoaster ride of psychological thrills, emotional poignancy and hysterical laughter. It really doesn’t get that much better than this for a night in with horror films and popcorn. Tim Matheson plays Jim Norman an emotionally unstable teacher with a family exceptionally well.
